November 24, 2023 Arusha, Tanzania; In a significant milestone for regional integration, the Federal Republic of Somalia has officially become a member of the East African Community (EAC).
The formal announcement was made by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud during his address at the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community Heads of States in Arusha, Tanzania.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his deep honor and gratitude for this historic achievement, highlighting the journey of resilience and perseverance that led to this moment. He acknowledged the unwavering support of the EAC member states and the Secretariat, emphasizing the role of solidarity and encouragement in reaching this milestone.
Special thanks were given to Dr. Abdusalam Omer, the Presidential Special Envoy to the EAC, whose leadership and diplomatic efforts were pivotal in realizing this aspiration. Somalia’s accession to the EAC symbolizes a new chapter of hope and opportunity for the region.
The country brings to the community its rich cultural heritage, strategic geographic location with a vast coastline, untapped resources, and a youthful and entrepreneurial population.
President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the EAC, emphasizing the nation’s readiness to engage in regional initiatives, learn from fellow member states, and contribute to collective progress. He underscored the mutual benefits of Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC, including economic, social, and political advancements.
