Speaking at the United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+4) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that Somalia “Can offer solutions to world regarding the aggravating food insecurity in order to leapfrog agricultural productivity worldwide”.
In his keynote address at the summit, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to address global food insecurity, the escalating impacts of climate change, and the development of sustainable and resilient food systems.
The President noted that Somalia continues to endure recurrent droughts and severe climate shocks, which have significantly worsened food insecurity across the country. He stressed that strengthening domestic food production, particularly in agriculture and livestock, is essential to overcoming these challenges and safeguarding the livelihoods of millions.
“Our Agricultural Transformation Strategy clearly outlines the importance of improving governance, increasing productivity, investing in critical infrastructure, advancing agribusiness, and enhancing institutional capacity. Agriculture must not only feed our people, it must also create jobs, sustain peace, and prepare Somalia for a resilient and prosperous future.” Said the President.
President Hassan Sheikh also highlighted the Federal Government’s National Transformation Plan, which places strong emphasis on increasing local production, stimulating rural economies, building robust public-private partnerships, and creating efficient market linkages that connect Somali producers to both domestic and global markets.
“Food security is peace-building. Agricultural transformation is nation-building. Every investment made in rural livelihoods is an investment in lasting peace and inclusive economic growth.” He continued.
In concluding his remarks, the President called on the international community to strengthen its partnership with Somalia by investing in agricultural infrastructure, green economy initiatives, and innovative technologies that can drive food system transformation and ensure long-term benefits for the Somali people.
