MOGADISHU, July 1, 2023 – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud joined thousands of citizens at Mogadishu Stadium to mark Somalia’s 63rd Independence Day. In his speech, the President addressed an array of current issues affecting the nation, notably the ongoing fight against terrorism and Somalia’s ongoing state-building efforts, among other key topics.
1- Drawing parallels between past colonialism and the present-day scourge of terrorism.
President Mohamud observed that Somalia perceives the persistent presence of terrorism as a painful form of subjugation. This “subjugation” has claimed lives, distorted the teachings of the sacred Islamic religion, and perpetrated diabolically destructive acts, such as the recent tragic event in which a mosque and Quran learning centers were destroyed in the town of Daru Nima.
“The actions of the terrorists offer clear evidence of their hostility towards the Somali people,” President Mohamud noted. He voiced his optimism regarding the second phase of the military offensive against Al-Shabaab, which aims for the complete liberation of the nation. President Mohamud vehemently criticized the terrorists for obstructing economic progress, suppressing freedom, and violating religious institutions. He asked, “What have these men spared for us?”
2- Somalia begins to assume security responsibilities.
In a positive development, President Mohamud announced the successful initiation of transferring military bases from ATMIS forces to Somali security forces, marking an important step towards the country’s self-sufficiency in security. This milestone is set to be reached by the end of the year 2024.
3- Federalism and Anti-Corruption Initiatives.
President Mohamud declared that the self-sufficiency of the government and its people is the bedrock of the nation’s progress. He underscored the need for enhanced cooperation between the federal and regional levels of government, highlighting key areas of focus such as economic development, implementing anti-corruption initiatives, bolstering security, finalizing the constitution, and improving economic infrastructure.
4- Somaliland’s role in Independence and Unity.
President Mohamud acknowledged the significant role of the people of Somaliland in achieving national liberation and unity. He noted that the federal government stands ready to address any grievances held by the people of Somaliland.
