On the occasion of Europe Day, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud delivered an address in Mogadishu, highlighting the significance of the European Union (EU) and its Member States as crucial partners in Somalia’s journey towards stability and progress. The President expressed his deep appreciation for the invaluable support the EU has provided to Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh emphasized Somalia’s strategic position and the vibrant Somali diaspora within EU member states, expressing the nation’s readiness to strengthen ties with the EU. “Together, we have the opportunity to drive progress and prosperity not only in our respective regions but on the global stage,” he stated.
The President underscored Somalia’s dedication to building strong, accountable institutions and the ongoing historic constitutional reform process, which reflects the country’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. He acknowledged the challenges and diverse perspectives encountered during this process but reaffirmed Somalia’s determination to ensure inclusivity.
President Hassan Sheikh made an unequivocal statement regarding Somalia’s resolve to hold direct national elections. “While we value dialogue and compromise, our resolve to establish direct elections remains unshakable. Remaining in the status quo is no longer an option,” he declared.
Addressing security challenges, President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed Somalia’s unwavering commitment to combating Al-Shabaab and called for support from Troop Contributing Countries in shaping the post-AMISOM security landscape. While acknowledging the challenges posed by Ethiopia’s aggression against Somali sovereignty, he emphasized Somalia’s dedication to peaceful resolution in adherence to international law and norms.
President Hassan Sheikh praised the EU as an exemplary model of what can be achieved through determination and sincere intentions to share a common future based on strong values and a commitment to sustaining peace and advancing socio-economic development. He expressed hope that the Horn of Africa and the African continent can draw inspiration from the EU’s political and socio-economic integration and governance to achieve sustainable development and peace.
President Hassan Sheikh congratulated the EU leadership, Member States, and citizens on Europe Day 2024, reaffirming the strong relationship between Somalia and the EU.
