Wednesday, June 7, 2023, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Ambassador Catriona Laing, at the Presidential Palace, Villa Somalia. The meeting came after Ambassador Laing arrived in Mogadishu on June 5 to officially assume her new role in the country.
During the productive meeting, discussions primarily focused on sustaining partnerships between the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations. They both reaffirmed their commitment to this crucial cooperation.
President Mohamud extended a cordial welcome to Ambassador Laing, expressing his best wishes for her success in the new role.
He stressed the importance of intensifying the Federal Government-UN partnership and acknowledged the UN’s notable role in supporting Somalia’s key priority areas, including security enhancement and state-building initiatives.
On her part, Ambassador Laing commended the progress registered by the Federal Government in its peace and state-building efforts. She recognised the significance of a durable partnership between the Federal Government and the UN, reinforcing the UN’s steadfast support for Somalia.
With the backing of its international partners, the Federal Government is steadfastly dedicated to amplifying its efforts to realise the aspirations of the Somali people for meaningful progress, improved governance, economic advancement, and sustained prosperity.
