H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud delivered keynote address at the Oslo Forum 2024, a gathering of global leaders, conflict mediators, and key actors united under the theme “Mediation against all odds”. The President’s speech highlighted Somalia’s ongoing struggle against international terrorism and the government’s multi-faceted approach to combating extremist violence.
Significant Gains in the Fight Against Terrorism
President Mohamud emphasized the Somali Government’s recent successes in its multi-pronged offensive against terrorist groups, which resulted in the liberation of extensive territories. These achievements demonstrate the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the threat of extremism and restoring peace and stability to the nation.
Pursuing Peaceful Means to Reduce Extremist Violence
The President underscored the government’s dedication to exploring all peaceful avenues to curb extremist violence. This includes initiating political engagements and offering amnesty to members who renounce extremist ideologies. However, he acknowledged that the terrorists’ global agenda complicates these efforts, as their reach extends beyond Somalia’s borders.
Ethiopia’s Actions Undermine Regional Stability
President Mohamud also addressed Ethiopia’s recent illegal actions against Somalia’s territorial integrity, which he stated violate international norms. He emphasized that these actions not only undermine regional stability but also hinder the fight against terrorists. The President called for the international community to recognize and address this issue to ensure a more secure and stable region.
